Dormaa East Municipal  District

Dormaa East District, located in the Bono Region of Ghana, was established in 2007 by Legislative Instrument 1851 and inaugurated on February 29, 2008. The district covers a land area of approximately 456 square kilometers and has Wamfie as its administrative capital. It shares boundaries with Dormaa Central Municipal to the west, Berekum East Municipal to the north, Sunyani West Municipal to the east, and Asunafo North Municipal and Asutifi North District to the south. According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Dormaa East has a population of 112,111, with a fairly balanced gender distribution.

The district’s economy is predominantly agriculture-based, with over 60% of the population engaged in crop farming, poultry, and agro-processing. Major crops include cocoa, maize, cassava, and plantain. Dormaa East is also known for its large-scale poultry farms and has been earmarked for a poultry processing factory under the One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative. Markets in Wamfie, Wamanafo, Kyeremasu, and Dormaa Akwamu serve as key commercial hubs, supporting both local trade and regional supply chains.

Educational infrastructure includes two senior high schools, a teacher training college, a private nursing and allied health college, and an agricultural college. There are also 33 junior high schools, 50 primary schools, and 44 kindergartens. Health services are provided by 19 facilities, including the Dormaa East District Hospital in Wamfie, CHPS compounds, private clinics, and mission hospitals. Despite these provisions, challenges persist in staffing, infrastructure, and access to potable water in some health centers.

In 2025, the Assembly initiated four exceptional development projects aimed at improving infrastructure and social services. These include the construction of a new market shed at Dormaa Akwamu, the commissioning of 25 market stalls and sanitation facilities at Kyeremasu, the launch of the Tree for Life Restoration Initiative at the Nseseresu Eco-Tourism Center with 700 seedlings planted, and the establishment of a District Planning Committee for the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. These projects reflect the Assembly’s commitment to environmental sustainability, economic empowerment, and community engagement.

The District Chief Executive, Hon. Osei Owusu King, has pledged to operate an open-door administration focused on transparency, stakeholder collaboration, and inclusive development. His leadership emphasizes the 24-hour economy initiative, grassroots participation, and strategic partnerships with traditional authorities and civil society. Hon. King has actively engaged with institutional heads, market leaders, and community members to align development priorities and ensure responsive governance.
