About Dormaa Central Municipal District
Dormaa Central Municipal Assembly, located in the western part of Ghana’s Bono Region, is a vibrant and historically significant municipality with Dormaa Ahenkro as its administrative capital.
Originally part of the larger Dormaa District established in 1989, the area underwent territorial restructuring in 2007 and 2012, resulting in the creation of Dormaa East and Dormaa West Districts. The remaining jurisdiction was elevated to municipal status in 2012, marking its growing urban and administrative prominence.
Spanning approximately 1,210 square kilometers, Dormaa Central shares boundaries with Jaman South to the north, Dormaa East to the east, Asunafo North and Asutifi North to the south and southeast, Dormaa West to the west, and Côte d’Ivoire to the northwest. The municipality has a population of 112,702 according to the 2021 census, with a youthful demographic and a slightly higher female population. About 60 percent of residents live in rural communities, where agriculture remains the dominant economic activity.
Farmers in Dormaa Central cultivate maize, cassava, plantain, cocoa, citrus, and mango, while cross-border trade with Côte d’Ivoire adds economic vibrancy. Financial services are provided by several rural and commercial banks, though expanding access to credit remains a development priority. Education and health services are well established, with senior high schools, basic schools, and health facilities including hospitals, health centers, CHPS compounds, and maternity homes serving the population.
Recent development efforts have transformed the municipality’s infrastructure and service delivery. A modern transport terminal was completed in Dormaa Ahenkro under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme, featuring a fire station, police post, passenger lounge, revenue office, and mechanized borehole. The facility has eased congestion and improved urban mobility.
Additional projects include the construction of an Accident and Emergency Centre, rehabilitation of roads, and the establishment of soap-making and block-cutting factories in selected communities. Over 2,200 farmers have also benefited from input support under the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative.
