Exxploring 4 Key Projects in Dennkyembour District

Denkyembour District, located in the southwestern corner of Ghana’s Eastern Region, spans approximately 520 square kilometers and shares boundaries with Kwaebibirem, Akyemansa, West Akim, and Birim Central. Its administrative capital, Akwatia, is a historic mining town known for diamond extraction and cultural diversity.

The district’s terrain is largely undulating and hilly, with marshlands and rivers such as the Birim and Mmo, which are unfortunately affected by illegal mining activities. Denkyembour falls within the semi-deciduous rainforest zone, supporting agriculture as its primary economic activity. Residents engage in both food and cash crop farming, cultivating maize, cassava, cocoa, oil palm, and citrus. Despite its agricultural potential, the district faces challenges including poor road networks, inadequate health and educational infrastructure, and environmental degradation.

In recent years, the district has benefited from targeted development initiatives under the One Million Dollar Per Constituency programme. Notable among these are the construction of two 6-unit classroom blocks at Nkwaakwaa No.4 and Akenkanor, which replaced unsafe structures and improved learning conditions. Additionally, two 16-unit market stalls were built at Kusi and Soabe to enhance local trade and economic empowerment, particularly for women. These projects, handed over by the Middle Belt Development Authority, reflect a commitment to improving social infrastructure and livelihoods.
