Leadership Spotlight: Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri District

Hon. Joseph Larchir Ali, District Chief Executive- Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri District

Hon. Joseph Larchir Ali  leads the Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri District Assembly with a focus on infrastructure, education, and water access. Appointed in 2021, his administration emphasizes inclusive development, peacebuilding, and strategic partnerships to address long-standing challenges in the district. His leadership has been instrumental in mobilizing resources for community-driven projects and improving service delivery across sectors.

The district, located in the North East Region of Ghana, was established in 2017 under Legislative Instrument 2348, with Bunkpurugu as its capital. It spans approximately 1,232 square kilometers and shares boundaries with Garu District to the north, Yunyoo-Nasuan and Chereponi Districts to the south, East Mamprusi to the west, and the Republic of Togo to the east. With a population of 82,384 (2021 census), the district is predominantly rural, and agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy. Major crops include maize, rice, millet, groundnuts, and soya beans, while small-scale trading and livestock rearing also contribute to livelihoods.

The district has 106 communities, supported by four Town/Area Councils and 100 Unit Committees. Infrastructure challenges persist, especially during the rainy season, with only 9.3 km of bitumen-surfaced roads and over 130 km of engineered feeder roads. Electricity coverage is uneven, with rural communities relying heavily on kerosene and solar energy. Despite these challenges, the district continues to make strides in health and education, with 16 health facilities and over 240 educational institutions.

Four key development projects have been implemented. First, the district resolved a major water crisis by constructing and handing over 20 mechanized boreholes to communities such as Nyamwai, Sakbauk, Tusuk Down, and Bunkpurugu Central, in partnership with Lifetime Wells.

Second, the assembly commenced the construction of a three-unit classroom block at Mayeem D/A Primary School in Bimbagu South under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion Project, addressing a critical infrastructure gap. Third, over 2,000 dual desks were distributed to schools across the district to reduce the furniture deficit, with plans underway to provide additional learning materials. Fourth, the district launched a sanitation improvement campaign, including the construction of household latrines and training of water and sanitation officers to maintain borehole facilities.

These initiatives reflect the district’s commitment to improving living standards through targeted investments in education, water, and sanitation. With continued peace and collaboration, Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri is positioning itself as a resilient and forward-looking district in Ghana’s eastern corridor.
