About Central Gonja Municipal District
Central Gonja
Central Gonja Municipal District, located in the southern part of Ghana’s Savannah Region, is a geographically expansive and economically strategic area with Buipe as its administrative capital. Established in 2004 through Legislative Instrument (LI) 1750, the district was carved out of the former West Gonja District and now spans approximately 8,353 square kilometers.
It shares boundaries with Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to the north, East Gonja Municipality to the east, West Gonja Municipality to the west, and Kintampo North Municipality in the Bono East Region to the south. The district is traversed by two major rivers—the White Volta and the Black Volta—which converge near Tuluwe and Mpaha, offering potential for irrigation, fishing, and tourism.
With a population of about 142,762 as of the 2021 census, Central Gonja is predominantly rural, and agriculture forms the backbone of its economy. Farmers cultivate crops such as maize, yam, rice, groundnuts, cowpea, and cassava, while livestock rearing and fishing along the Volta rivers supplement household incomes. The district also hosts agro-processing activities like shea butter extraction, rice milling, and groundnut oil production. Buipe is home to major industrial installations including the Savannah Diamond Cement Company and PBC Shea Ltd, as well as inland ports that facilitate trade along the Volta Lake.
Recent development efforts have focused on infrastructure, education, health, and economic empowerment. Notable projects include the construction of a community center, an operating theatre at Buipe Polyclinic, residential accommodations for medical and security personnel, and a new court complex. The district has also benefited from initiatives like the Planting for Food and Jobs programme, One Village One Dam, and the Inclusive Community Empowerment (ICE) project, which promotes peacebuilding and mental health awareness.
