About Bolgatanga East Municipal District
: A Rising District with Grassroots Momentum
Carved out of the larger Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly in 2018 through Legislative Instrument 2350, Bolgatanga East Municipality is one of Ghana’s youngest administrative districts. With its capital at Zuarungu, the municipality spans approximately 73 square kilometers and is bordered by Bongo District to the north, Talensi and Nabdam to the south and east, and Bolgatanga Municipality to the west.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Bolgatanga East is home to 38,824 residents, comprising 18,836 males and 19,988 females. The district’s terrain is relatively flat, with fertile valleys suitable for rice cultivation and other crops. Agriculture remains the dominant economic activity, with farmers cultivating millet, sorghum, maize, groundnuts, and vegetables such as tomatoes and onions. Livestock and poultry rearing are also common, though mostly practiced on a small scale.
The municipality faces challenges typical of emerging districts, including poor road networks, erratic rainfall, limited access to potable water, and youth migration. However, its leadership has been proactive in addressing these issues through targeted interventions.
