East Gonja Municipal District

East Gonja Municipality, situated in the southeastern corridor of Ghana’s Savannah Region, is a territory rich in history and agricultural vitality. Its capital, Salaga, has long held cultural and commercial significance, dating back to its role as a slave market and trade hub in precolonial times.

The municipality was originally established as East Gonja District in 1988 and later elevated to municipal status in 2018. It has experienced several boundary adjustments, including the creation of Kpandai District in 2008 and North East Gonja District in 2019, reflecting its evolving administrative landscape.

East Gonja spans an expansive land area of approximately 9,351 square kilometers, bordered by Central Gonja, Mion District, Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, Nanumba North and South, and the Bono East Region. The population stands at around 117,755, largely rural, with agriculture serving as the principal economic activity. Farmers cultivate yam, maize, rice, and millet, while shea nut picking, fishing along the Volta Lake, and livestock rearing supplement livelihoods.

Development initiatives in East Gonja have gained steady momentum. The Northern Development Authority (NDA) recently handed over two furnished 3-unit classroom blocks to Imamiya Islamic Primary School and Kpanbu M/A Primary School. These facilities include libraries, offices, and washrooms, aiming to elevate educational standards and improve school infrastructure. In health, the municipality has commissioned a new maternity block to address maternal health needs, reducing risks during childbirth and expanding access to essential services.

Meanwhile, in Kafaba, the Total Life Enhancement Centre-Ghana (TOLEC-GH) launched the Inclusive Community Empowerment (ICE) project—an initiative designed to foster peaceful coexistence through mental health outreach and gender-sensitive conflict resolution. Water infrastructure has also been a priority, with over 170 boreholes and 12 small-town water systems now supporting clean water access for remote communities.

Hon. Yazid underscored Salaga’s legacy as a symbol of African resilience and emphasized the municipality’s intention to become a prime destination for heritage tourism. His leadership aligns development goals with cultural preservation, creating pathways for both economic empowerment and communal pride.
