Bekwai Municipal Assembly: Advancing Development Through Strategic Leadership and Infrastructure

Bekwai Municipal Assembly, situated in the southern part of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, is one of the forty-three districts that contribute to the region’s socio-economic framework. Initially established in 1988 as the Amansie East District through a reorganization of the former Amansie District Council, the area has undergone notable administrative transformations.

In 2003, the western part of Amansie East District was carved out to form the Amansie Central District under the leadership of President John Agyekum Kufuor. Later, in 2008, the eastern portion was also separated to establish the Bosome Freho District, with the remaining part elevated to a municipal status and renamed as Bekwai Municipal Assembly. Today, Bekwai serves as the capital, anchoring development efforts and governance.

The municipality continues to grow through strategic interventions designed to enhance infrastructure, public services, and economic activities. A prominent initiative is the completion of a two-storey office complex aimed at improving the coordination and delivery of services across decentralized departments.

This administrative upgrade is bolstered by extensive road rehabilitation works targeting feeder roads to foster connectivity and economic vitality, particularly for farmers and traders in remote communities. Agriculture remains a vital sector, with the municipality implementing the “Planting for Food and Jobs” programme, supporting farmers with inputs and technical guidance to increase yield and food security. Further diversifying its local economy, Bekwai is also investing in the development of its tourism potential, particularly at Kokotro and Kokofu, with the aim of attracting visitors, creating jobs, and preserving cultural heritage.

The municipality’s leadership also witnessed a new chapter with the unanimous endorsement of Mr. Issaka Salifu as the President’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). In a voting exercise supervised by the Municipal Office of the Electoral Commission (EC), all 49 members of the Assembly voted in favor of his appointment. Before his nomination, Mr. Salifu served as the Deputy Constituency Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), earning a reputation as a principled and effective leader.

His appointment is seen as a promising development, with expectations for strong leadership and administrative competence. Speaking to the media after the vote, Mr. Salifu expressed deep gratitude for the unanimous support and acknowledged the weight of the responsibility entrusted to him, pledging to work diligently to meet the aspirations of the people of Bekwai.

From governance to infrastructure and agriculture to tourism, the Bekwai Municipal Assembly exemplifies a proactive approach to community development—anchored by visionary leadership and targeted investments that reflect the evolving needs of its residents.
