Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipal, located in the western part of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, was officially established in 2018 following the division of the former Atwima Nwabiagya District.

With Nkawie as its administrative capital, the municipality spans approximately 294.84 square kilometers and shares boundaries with Offinso North to the north, Atwima Mponua and Atwima Kwanwoma to the south, Ahafo Ano South to the west, and Kwabre East and Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to the east.

According to the 2021 census, the municipality has a population of 161,893, with a slight female majority. The area is a blend of rural and peri-urban communities, with agriculture, trade, and services forming the backbone of its economy.
Development in Atwima Nwabiagya South has accelerated in recent years, with strategic investments across infrastructure, health, education, and sanitation.

The municipality has completed a spacious lorry terminal in Nkawie, equipped with a conference hall, offices, washrooms, a 60-seater waiting area, and a parking pavilion for commercial vehicles. Additional facilities include a rehabilitated slaughterhouse, a 20-seater public washroom, and an ambulance bay—all aimed at improving public health and transport services.

Ongoing projects include a one-storey six-unit staff bungalow for the Assembly, 26 commercial shops at Toase, and a new nursing training college and maternity ward at Abuakwa. Road infrastructure is also receiving attention, with town road upgrades in Akrofuom and emergency culvert construction at Abuakwa-Agogo enhancing mobility and flood resilience. The municipality’s agricultural sector remains vibrant, supported by fertile lands and extension services that promote crop diversification and food security.

At the helm of these initiatives is Hon. Wisdom Osei Boamah, affectionately known as Okumkom, the newly confirmed Municipal Chief Executive. Endorsed unanimously by all 31 Assembly Members, Hon. Boamah has pledged to lead with transparency, community engagement, and a results-driven approach. His leadership priorities include improving healthcare delivery, completing stalled health projects such as the Afari Military Hospital, and upgrading the Abuakwa Polyclinic to full hospital status. He has also committed to monthly free health screenings for adults and free health insurance for children under 18, alongside educational scholarships for needy students.

Infrastructure remains a central focus, with Hon. Boamah promising to rehabilitate dilapidated roads and public facilities, including the municipal office itself, which he described as lacking basic amenities. His administration has also launched a monthly communal labor initiative to promote sanitation and civic responsibility across towns in the municipality.

In addition to his development agenda, Hon. Boamah is actively collaborating with national agencies to tackle illegal mining, working with the Minerals Development Fund to deploy monitoring tools and dismantle galamsey operations. His leadership style blends grassroots mobilization with strategic partnerships, positioning Atwima Nwabiagya South for inclusive growth and environmental sustainability.
