About Atwima Mponua District
Driving Progress in Atwima Mponua: Strategic Projects and New Leadership for Community Advancement
Atwima Mponua District, nestled in the westernmost part of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, spans approximately 2,411 square kilometers and counts Nyinahin as its administrative capital. It shares borders with Amansie West, Ahafo Ano South West, Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal, and Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai of the Western Region.
With a population of 155,254 as of the 2021 census, the district remains predominantly rural, characterized by its undulating terrain, lush forest reserves including Tano-Offin and Gyemira, and fertile soils that support year-round agriculture, thanks to its double maxima rainfall pattern.
Agriculture forms the bedrock of the local economy, engaging over 260 farming communities organized into operational zones under the supervision of Agricultural Extension Agents. Cocoa, maize, cassava, rice, and vegetables thrive in this climate, while timber-based enterprises, aquaculture, and agro-processing offer additional economic opportunities.
However, development has long been constrained by poor road networks and limited veterinary services.
Recent years have seen a marked shift toward strategic development across key sectors. In health, the district has made commendable strides through the expansion of CHPS compounds, equipping facilities and housing staff to extend care into remote communities.
The water and sanitation sector has seen robust investment, with borehole drilling, mechanized water systems, and public toilet construction improving hygiene and access to safe drinking water. In education, schools have benefited from renovated classroom blocks, enhanced teaching resources, and teacher capacity-building programs, including ICT integration to modernize learning. Agriculture continues to be reinforced through modern farming practices, extension services, and market linkage initiatives aimed at boosting productivity and income generation for farmers.
To sustain this momentum, President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Ibrahim Issahaq as District Chief Executive for the Atwima Mponua District Assembly. Issahaq’s leadership is expected to strengthen local governance and accelerate development. In a parallel announcement, Yakubu Issifu has been nominated to head the Asante Mampong Municipal Assembly.
Upon confirmation, both leaders will be pivotal in steering policy, mobilizing resources, and championing community growth across their respective jurisdictions
