Profile
Amo Johnson Anom is the current District Chief Executive (DCE) of Atiwa West. Appointed in April 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama, Mr. Anom brings to the role a wealth of experience in education, local governance, and community development.
Prior to his appointment, he served as a professional teacher and Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the Atiwa District. He has consistently praised teachers for their dedication and has called for increased support, particularly for those in rural and underserved areas.
Since assuming office, Mr. Anom has demonstrated strong leadership in environmental protection and security enforcement. In May 2025, he partnered with the Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund, Dr. Hannah Bissiw, in a high-profile operation that led to the arrest of ten illegal miners near the Akyem-Abomosu STEM School. He has firmly condemned galamsey activities and warned community leaders against shielding offenders, affirming the Assembly’s commitment to the “polluter pays” principle.
Mr. Anom’s leadership is grounded in a clear vision for sustainable development, transparency, and grassroots participation. Under his stewardship, Atiwa West is steadily addressing infrastructural deficits while positioning itself as a hub for agro-processing and environmental resilience.
About Atiwa West District
Atiwa West District: Development Projects, Leadership Profile & Environmental Reforms
Atiwa West District, located in the Eastern Region of Ghana, was carved out of the former East Akim District Assembly—now the East Akim Municipal Assembly—in 2004. Nestled at the foot of the Atiwa Range, its administrative capital is Kwabeng. The district spans an area of 656 square kilometers and lies between longitudes 0° 3′ West and 0° 50′ East, and latitudes 6° 10′ North and 6° 30′ North.
It shares boundaries with Kwahu West Municipal and Kwahu South District to the north, Fanteakwa South District to the northeast, East Akim Municipal to the southeast, Kwaebibirem Municipal to the south, and Birim North District to the west. Strategically located near agriculturally rich zones, Atiwa West holds strong potential for agro-processing development, offering opportunities to harness raw materials from neighboring districts.
Despite its promise, the district’s expansive size includes numerous smaller communities whose populations may fall below the threshold for certain socio-economic investments. As a relatively young administrative area, it faces pressing infrastructure needs, demanding significant financial inputs to bridge existing development gaps. According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, the district has a total population of 61,219—comprising 31,288 males and 29,931 females.
Four Key Development Projects in Atiwa West
1. Construction of a 40-bed District Hospital at Kwabeng, which is nearing completion and expected to significantly improve access to quality healthcare across the district.
2. Development of a 60-bed Agenda 111 Hospital at Abomosu, currently 65% complete, designed to serve as a critical referral center and bolster the national health infrastructure.
3. Establishment of a two-storey office complex to house the District Fire Station and National Health Insurance Secretariat, aimed at enhancing emergency response and streamlining public health services.
4. Launch of a vigorous reclamation campaign, dubbed “The Polluting Pace Policy,” to restore abandoned mining sites and combat the environmental and safety threats posed by illegal mining.
This initiative includes systematic mapping of pits, backfilling of hazardous sites, planting of 10,000 trees, and community engagement to create green jobs in agriculture and reforestation. The campaign was spurred by recent tragedies, including the drowning of a young boy in an abandoned pit at Akrofufu.
