Hon. Amoakoaa, (DCE - Asante Akyem North District
Asante Akyem North
Asante Akyem North District, located in the eastern corridor of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, was established in 2012 through Legislative Instrument 2057 following its split from the former Asante Akyem North Municipal Assembly.
With Agogo as its administrative capital, the district spans approximately 1,125 square kilometers and shares boundaries with Sekyere Kumawu and Sekyere Afram Plains to the north, Kwahu East to the east, Asante Akyem South and Central to the south, and Sekyere East to the west. Its proximity to the Eastern Region provides strategic access to regional markets, especially for agricultural produce, reinforcing its role as a vital trade and farming hub.
The district’s economy is predominantly agrarian, with agriculture employing over 72 percent of the labor force. Cocoa, cassava, plantain, citrus, and maize are the major crops cultivated, supported by fertile soils and a climate that features two distinct rainy seasons. Forest reserves such as Bandai Hill and Dome River contribute to ecological balance and offer potential for conservation and tourism. Communities like Agogo, Domeabra, Juansa, Hwidiem, and Wioso have attained urban status, reflecting the district’s growing population, which stood at 85,788 as of the 2021 census.
Under the leadership of Hon. Sarah Amoakoaa, the district has embarked on a renewed development agenda focused on infrastructure, health, education, and local economic empowerment.
Her confirmation as Municipal Chief Executive in June 2025 followed a contentious process, but she has since emphasized unity and inclusive governance, pledging to work with all stakeholders regardless of political affiliation.
Among the notable projects in the Municipality include the commissioning of a new Electricity Company of Ghana substation at Agogo, aimed at stabilizing power supply and supporting industrial growth. A modern agro-processing factory has also been completed to boost plantain production and create jobs for local farmers. In the health sector, a new fire station and administrative block have been constructed to enhance emergency response and improve municipal operations.
Additionally, the Juansa market has been upgraded to support commercial activity and improve livelihoods for traders and farmers.
Hon. Amoakoaa’s leadership is marked by a commitment to transparency, stakeholder engagement, and grassroots development.
Her administration continues to prioritize infrastructure renewal, health accessibility, and economic diversification, with a focus on building a resilient and inclusive district.
