Aowin
Aowin Municipal, located in the Western North Region of Ghana, stands as a vital administrative and economic hub with Enchi as its capital. Originally established in 1988 as the Aowin-Suaman District under Legislative Instrument (L.I) 1392, it underwent a significant transformation in 2012 when Suaman was carved out, leading to its reconstitution as Aowin District.

The municipality attained full municipal status in November 2017 through L.I 2287. Spanning a land area of 2,607 square kilometers, Aowin shares borders with Amenfi West Municipal to the east, Juaboso and Sefwi Akontombra Districts to the north, Jomoro Municipal to the south, and the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire to the west. According to the 2021 census, the population stands at 129,721, with a fairly balanced gender distribution.

The local economy is predominantly agrarian, with over 79 percent of the working population engaged in agriculture, particularly cocoa, oil palm, and food crops.

Under the leadership of the Municipal Assembly, Aowin has embarked on several transformative projects aimed at improving infrastructure, social services, and economic resilience. One notable initiative is the Mile 4 to Elubo Road Project, a long-awaited intervention that promises to enhance connectivity and trade across the municipality and beyond. The project, which had stalled for years, is now progressing steadily, with procurement processes completed and construction underway.

In the agricultural sector, the municipality has benefited from the JICA and GRIP-supported rice farming initiative, which provides training and resources to local farmers. This program is part of a broader effort to diversify agricultural production and improve food security. Complementing this is the Forest Investment Programme (FIP), which promotes sustainable land and environmental management practices, particularly in areas affected by deforestation and illegal mining.

Education and youth empowerment have also received attention through the Government Scholarship Scheme, which currently supports 69 tertiary students from the municipality. Additionally, the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) and Youth Employment Programme have created job opportunities for young people, helping to reduce unemployment and build local capacity.
Sanitation and public health are being addressed through the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) program and enhanced waste management systems. The Environmental Health Department has intensified efforts in refuse collection, food vendor screening, and hygiene education, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.

At the helm of these developments is Hon. Stephen Morcher, the newly confirmed Municipal Chief Executive. Sworn in on April 14, 2025, with unanimous support from all 35 assembly members, Mr. Morcher has pledged to pursue an open-door policy and inclusive governance. He brings a youthful energy and a commitment to unity, development, and transparency. His priorities include completing the Mile 4 to Elubo road, tackling illegal mining (galamsey), and addressing youth unemployment. Backed by President John Dramani Mahama and regional leadership, Mr. Morcher’s administration is poised to usher in a new era of growth and accountability for Aowin.
