Profile of DCE

Under the leadership of Hon. The municipality is home to the Xavi Bird Sanctuary and the rare Sitatunga species found in the Avu Lagoon, positioning it as a hub for eco-tourism and conservation. The Assembly’s vision is to promote good governance and accelerated human development, while its mission focuses on equitable service delivery and inclusive growth.

Akatsi South Municipal District

Akatsi South Municipal Assembly, established by Legislative Instrument 2165 in March 2012 and elevated to municipal status in October 2020 under LI 2420, is strategically located in the Volta Region of Ghana. With Akatsi as its capital, the municipality spans approximately 536 square kilometers and shares boundaries with Keta Municipal to the south, Ketu North to the east, South and Central Tongu to the west, and Akatsi North and Agortime-Ziope to the north. The population, projected at over 99,000 in 2024, is predominantly Ewe, with a strong presence of traditional leadership under the Avenor Traditional Area.

The municipality is culturally vibrant, celebrating festivals such as Avenor-Hogbeza, Agbeliza, Denyaza, Atitoezaa, and Blizaa, which reflect its rich heritage and agricultural pride.

Among the notable development projects undertaken in recent years is the construction of a six-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities at Kpodzivi, which has been completed to enhance access to quality education. Another impactful initiative is the cladding and renovation of the Tsigbene school block, improving the learning environment for pupils. In the health sector, the Assembly supported the distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticide Nets and implemented public awareness campaigns on cholera and Ebola prevention, reinforcing its commitment to community health. Additionally, the municipality has prioritized infrastructure upgrades, including the installation of streetlights and the opening of virgin roads to improve mobility and safety across communities.

Akatsi South continues to pursue a home-grown Local Economic Development strategy, integrating agriculture, tourism, and small-scale enterprise development. With vast clay deposits in areas like Suipe and Wute, the Assembly is actively promoting investment in brick and tile manufacturing. The municipality’s economic landscape is largely agrarian, with rice, maize, pepper, and carrot cultivation supported by irrigation schemes such as dug-out wells and the Caterpillar dam. Through these initiatives, Akatsi South is steadily transforming into a model of inclusive and sustainable development in Ghana’s Volta Region.
