Agotime-Ziope Municipal  District

Agotime-Ziope District, located in Ghana’s Volta Region with Agotime-Kpetoe as its
capital, continues to distinguish itself through its rich cultural heritage and strategic
approach to development.

Formed in 2012 through Legislative Instrument 2080 after the
split of Adaklu-Anyigbe District, it spans approximately 330 square kilometers and
shares borders with Adaklu District and Ho Municipal to the west and north, Akatsi
North and Central Tongu to the south, and the Republic of Togo to the east. With a
population of 39,553 according to the 2021 census—composed of 52.5% female and
47.5% male—the district is predominantly Ewe-speaking and deeply rooted in
communal traditions.

At the heart of its cultural identity is Agotime-Kpetoe’s world-renowned Kente weaving
tradition, showcased annually during the Agbamevorza Festival. This celebration not
only reinforces cultural pride but also strengthens tourism and local entrepreneurship.
The district’s proximity to Togo fosters vibrant cross-border trade and cultural exchange,
enriching both its economy and social fabric.

Agriculture remains the foundation of Agotime-Ziope’s economy, with more than half of
its workforce engaged in farming, forestry, and fishing. A substantial portion of residents
work in informal sectors, complemented by emerging interests in hospitality and service-
based enterprises. The district also reflects a youthful demographic profile, with 37.6%
of its population under the age of 15 and a fertility rate of 3.8 births per woman. Literacy
stands at 75.7%, though male literacy outpaces female achievement, and households
average 4.3 members.

Here are four notable development projects currently underway or recently implemented
in the Agotime-Ziope District:

1. District Hospital Construction in Kpetoe

A major health infrastructure initiative aimed at improving access to quality
healthcare. The hospital is still under construction and is expected to serve as a
central facility for the district and surrounding communities.

2. Feeder Road Upgrades

Several feeder roads, including the Kpetoe-Afegame and Ziope-Wudzedeke
routes, are being improved with gravel surfacing to enhance transportation and
connectivity, especially during the rainy season.

3. CHPS Zone Expansion

The district has expanded its Community-based Health Planning and Services
(CHPS) zones to 14 locations, improving primary healthcare delivery in rural
areas.

4. Birthing Centre at Mangotideke

A dedicated birthing facility has been established to support maternal health and
reduce childbirth-related risks in underserved parts of the district.
