Profile: Hon. Joseph Amankwah

Municipal Chief Executive, Kwabre East Municipality

Hon. Joseph Amankwah, a proud native of Mamponteng in the Ashanti Region, is a rising force in Ghanaian politics and a distinguished public servant within the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Born on December 2, 1972, he currently serves as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Kwabre East Municipality — a role in which he has earned widespread acclaim for his hands-on leadership and commitment to development.

Hon. Amankwah’s educational path reflects his lifelong dedication to learning and service. He began at Simms Senior High School, where he distinguished himself as Senior Prefect in 1994. He went on to attend Mampong Technical College of Education, where his leadership credentials deepened as he served as SRC President, advocating for student welfare and improved campus life.

Professional Background in Education

Before assuming public office, Hon. Amankwah built a strong foundation in the education sector. He has over a decade of experience as an educator and administrator, helping to shape the futures of countless young Ghanaians. He was Headteacher of Jamasi Tabre D/A Exp Primary School in 2012, later becoming Circuit Supervisor at Agona North Circuit in 2018. Since 2019, he has served in the Education Directorate of Sekyere South District, where his policy insights and supervision have contributed significantly to improved academic outcomes.

His political journey within the NDC has been steady and strategic. He served as Vice Chairman of the NDC in the Kwabre East Constituency (2018) and was previously the Branch Organizer for the Nuruhuda Branch in Mamponteng. His understanding of constituency needs and party organization makes him a vital asset in the party's bid to win Kwabre East.

His civic service includes his tenure as Assemblyman for the Mamponteng Bronum Electoral Area in 2011, where he advocated for road upgrades, access to healthcare, and improved public services. His leadership roots stretch back to 2006 when he served as the Organizer of the Association of Teacher Trainees (Ashba), demonstrating a deep and early commitment to advocacy and collective progress.

A Vision for Kwabre East

Hon. Joseph Amankwah envisions a transformed Kwabre East — one where development reaches every community, where education becomes a tool for social mobility, and where the voices of the people drive local and national policy. With experience in governance, education, and politics, he brings a unique combination of compassion, competence, and courage to his roles.

Catalysts of Growth: Development Highlights in Kwabre East District

Kwabre East District, one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, occupies a strategic position in the Ashanti Region.

The district was carved out of the former Kwabre Sekyere District in 1988 and lies within latitudes 6°44′ North and longitudes 1°33′ to 1°44′ West.

With Mamponteng as its administrative capital—just 14.5 kilometers northeast of Kumasi—the district forms a vital part of the Greater Kumasi City Region and covers 246.8 square kilometers, accounting for approximately 1.01% of the Ashanti Region’s landmass. According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Kwabre East has a population of 296,814 residents, comprising 143,684 males and 153,130 females.

It shares boundaries with Sekyere South to the north, Kumasi Metropolitan to the south, Ejisu Municipal to the southeast, Atwima Nwabiagya to the west, and Offinso Municipal to the northwest. Its proximity to Kumasi and strong population growth have positioned it as a critical development zone.

The district has made notable strides in infrastructure, education, commerce, and health. One of the major undertakings is road rehabilitation and drainage work across key corridors, aimed at improving mobility, mitigating flood risks, and enhancing access to markets and services.

In the education sector, several projects have been rolled out, including the construction of classroom blocks, donation of 400 dual desks to Antoa Senior High School, and the establishment of a 3-unit teacher’s quarters at Antoa, complete with modern facilities like kitchens and sanitary areas. These investments are designed to reduce overcrowding in classrooms, improve learning environments, and incentivize teachers to remain in underserved communities.

On the commercial front, the development of the Adanwomase Market has significantly boosted local economic activity. This project involves the construction of a seven-unit lockable store block and eighty open market stalls, offering secure and organized spaces for traders, especially those involved in the district’s renowned kente-weaving industry. To improve public health and access to clean water, the district has invested in water and sanitation projects, including borehole drilling, the construction of sanitation facilities, and hygiene education programs. These interventions are particularly vital in peri-urban and rural communities where such amenities have long been inadequate.

Kwabre East District continues to position itself as a nucleus of sustainable urban growth, with development projects that are both pragmatic and people-centered. If you'd like this content refined further into a presentation summary, stakeholder brief, or article, I’d be happy to assist.
