Ada East District Champions Climate-Smart Development with Strategic Green Investments

The Ada East District, one of Ghana’s 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), is charting a bold path toward sustainable development. Located in the eastern corridor of the Greater Accra Region, the district shares borders with Central Tongu District to the north, South Tongu and Ada West Districts to the west, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. Its capital, Ada Foah, rests along the coastline, approximately 20 kilometers from the Accra-Aflao highway and just 2 kilometers from the Volta River Estuary.

Home to 76,411 residents according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Ada East comprises 37,034 males and 39,377 females, stretching across latitudes 5°45 south to 6°00 north and longitudes 0°20 west to 0°35 east. The district’s distinct geography positions it as a strategic hub for development, especially in areas of agriculture and eco-tourism.

In August 2024, the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD), in collaboration with the Norwegian Government and the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), directed GH₵319,271.00 toward climate-resilient initiatives through the LoCAL-ACE program. The goal of this investment is to promote green economic growth and help communities adapt to climate change through localized solutions grounded in circular economy and sustainable agriculture principles.

The district has embraced this initiative with a vision to modernize agriculture, improve infrastructure, and enhance local livelihoods. Among the completed projects is the rehabilitation of three polyhouse structures and micro-irrigation systems at Dzitrokwe, designed to support all-season farming and efficient water use. A solar-powered submersible pump was also installed at Angorsikope to feed a mini-irrigation dam, securing consistent access to water for crop production. At Asigbekope, a demonstration farm featuring shed net technology was constructed to train farmers in climate-smart agriculture practices adapted to local conditions. Additionally, in Ada Foah, the district capital, new market sheds, a protective fence wall, and drainage systems were completed to foster cleaner, more resilient trading spaces.

With growing momentum and a vision rooted in sustainability, Ada East District is setting a benchmark for environmentally conscious development, offering a model for rural growth across Ghana, under the leadership of Mr. Kenneth Kabu Kofi Konor, the District Chief Executive.
