Strategic Urban Interventions Driving Abuakwa North’s Municipal Transformation
Abuakwa North Municipal is one of the thirty‐three districts of Ghana’s Eastern Region.
Carved out of the former East Akim District, it was inaugurated on June 1, 2018, with Kukurantumi as its administrative capital. Covering roughly 311 km² and home to about 91,300 residents as of the 2021 census, the municipality’s economy is anchored in agriculture—cocoa, oil palm, coconut, cassava and maize dominate its farmlands, while the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana in nearby New Tafo drives agro-processing innovation.
Road connectivity remains a challenge, however, as many feeder and urban arteries still require rehabilitation to ease post-harvest transport and spur economic activity.
Leadership Under Municipal Chief Executive Charles Yeboah Darko
At the helm of this transformation is Charles Yeboah Darko, unanimously confirmed as Municipal Chief Executive by Assembly Members in May 2025, A seasoned community leader known for his inclusive approach and strong track record in local governance, he has made resource mobilization, citizen engagement and sustainable service delivery the cornerstones of his administration.
Strategic Urban Interventions
Expanding Water Access through Mechanized Boreholes
Recognizing water scarcity as a barrier to both education and public health, the Assembly—partnering with SOS Children’s Villages Ghana—commissioned mechanized borehole systems for five township schools across Kukurantumi, New Tafo, Old Tafo and Obodanse. Each installation comprises a 5,000-litre overhead tank and a standing pipe, ensuring over 3,000 students and teachers now enjoy reliable, clean water, thereby advancing educational outcomes and hygiene standards.
Boosting Agricultural Productivity under Planting for Food and Jobs
To shore up food security and livelihoods, the Assembly distributed 100 kg of NPK fertilizer and 5 kg of high-yield maize seeds to 137 local farmers under the national Planting for Food and Jobs initiative.
By equipping smallholders with quality inputs, the project seeks to reduce post-harvest losses, elevate yields and curb reliance on food imports—all critical steps toward a more resilient local food system.
Strengthening Access to Justice with a New District Court
In line with its decentralization mandate, the municipality inaugurated a modern District Court facility in Kukurantumi. This expansion of judicial infrastructure brings legal services closer to residents, decongests regional courts and reinforces the rule of law at the community level. Local stakeholders anticipate faster dispute resolution and enhanced business confidence as a result.
Enhancing Environmental Hygiene via Community-Led Clean-Up Campaigns
Tackling sanitation gaps, the Assembly has spearheaded monthly clean-up exercises in Osiem, Kukurantumi and surrounding environs. Mobilizing youth groups, traditional leaders and sanitation task forces, these campaigns complement the municipality’s broader water and sanitation strategy—already achieving 80% water coverage and 63% hygienic sanitation acces-s—to foster healthier living environments and strengthen civic pride.
These four interventions exemplify Abuakwa North’s forward-leaning vision—to evolve from a predominantly agrarian district into a sustainably industrialized municipality underpinned by robust infrastructure, human capital development and participatory governance.
