About Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly

Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly: A Hub of Inclusive Development and Democratic Governance

Located within the Greater Accra Region, alongside 25 other Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), Ablekuma West is a key player in promoting democratic governance, local development, and public participation.

This article delves into the municipality's geographical location, administrative structure, governance practices, and developmental initiatives that shape its role as a forward-looking urban district.

According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, the municipality has a population of 153,490 residents, comprising 73,879 males and 79,611 females. However, current estimates suggest that the area may now be home to over 200,000 residents** across approximately 25 settlements.

Geographical Boundaries and Administrative Structure

Situated in the western corridor of Accra, Ablekuma West shares boundaries with:
- Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly (North)
- Accra Metropolitan Assembly (East)
- Weija–Gbawe Municipal Assembly** (West)
- Gulf of Guinea(South)

Covering an area of roughly 15.01 square kilometers, the municipality is both compact and densely populated, making governance and service delivery strategically important.

Top 4 Developmental Milestones

Dansoman Inner Roads and Real Estate Access Upgrades

Strategic road projects—including the Emmanuel Presby junction to Tunga and the Ave Maria School to Petroleum Down corridor—are improving mobility, reducing flood risk, and enhancing real estate investment opportunities across residential zones.

Green Ghana Tree-Planting Initiative

As part of the national reforestation campaign, the municipality has planted thousands of trees across public spaces, promoting urban greening, coastal protection, and eco-friendly urban agriculture.

300 Household Toilet Project in Glefe and Shiabu

This major sanitation intervention has curbed open defecation and improved hygiene in low-income areas. It has also increased the environmental appeal of these communities for future development.

Cosmetology and Work-and-Pay Taxi Empowerment Programs

With over 6,000 direct beneficiaries, these social protection initiatives have empowered youth and women through vocational training and mobile job creation, spurring inclusive economic growth.

Security, Infrastructure & Natural Challenges

The Assembly ensures public safety through a Justice and Security Sub-Committee and the **Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC), supported by a fully equipped police and fire station.

The local geology, consisting of coastal sands, quartzite, sandstone, and lateritic clay soils presents both opportunities and challenges. While laterite gravels and sands support construction, poorly drained zones with expansive black cotton’ soils require engineering consideration due to their potential instability.

Nii George Kpakpo Allotey is  the Municipal Chief Executive of Ablekuma West.
