Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly Projects | Urban Development and Sanitation Initiatives in Accra
The Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly (AbCMA) was officially established on 19th February 2019 under Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2376, following its separation from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
As a newly created municipality, AbCMA adopted a Medium Term Development Plan (2019–2021) derived from the parent Assembly’s broader development framework (2018–2021), providing a clear roadmap for initiating and implementing local development projects from March 2019 onward.
Strategically located in the northern part of the Greater Accra Region, the Assembly spans a land area of approximately 9.14 square kilometres. Geographically, it lies between Latitude 5° 81’3” N and 5° 67’7” N, and Longitude 0° 24’0” W and 0° 13’1” W. The municipality shares boundaries with several key administrative areas:
- West – Ablekuma West Municipal
- East and South – Accra Metropolitan Assembly
- North – Ablekuma North Municipal
- Northeast – Okaikoi South Sub-Metropolitan District
This strategic location and compact urban footprint position the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly as a critical hub for integrated urban development and service delivery in Accra.
-Flagship Projects and Initiatives
1. Shukura Market Redevelopment
The transformation of the historic Shukura Market is underway through the Coastal Development Authority's IPEP initiative. The project replaces deteriorating stalls with modern infrastructure and supports uninterrupted commerce via temporary market sheds provided to traders.
2. Agenda 111 Hospital at Agbogbloshie
On reclaimed land once dominated by informal settlements, the planned Agenda 111 health facility will serve over 200,000 residents. Though construction has stalled, the project remains a major investment in local healthcare infrastructure.
3. Environmental Health and Sanitation Modernization
AbCMA has emphasized improved sanitation enforcement and strategic innovation in managing public health. Initiatives span waste management, inspection services, and public sensitization campaigns aimed at promoting cleaner urban living.
4. Social Protection and Aged Welfare
Programs supporting the registration of elderly residents onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS)—notably at the Center of Hope—demonstrate a focus on inclusive care and community-based social services.
