About Nkwanta North Municipal  District

Nkwanta North District, in the northern part of Ghana’s Oti Region, is a vibrant agricultural enclave with deep cultural roots and growing development ambitions. Its capital, Kpassa, serves as the administrative and commercial center. The district was carved out of the former Nkwanta District in 2008 through Legislative Instrument 1846, with the southern portion becoming Nkwanta South.

It shares borders with Nanumba South to the north, Nkwanta South to the south, Kpandai to the west, and the Republic of Togo to the east. Covering approximately 1,510 square kilometers, the district is characterized by savannah grasslands, perennial rivers, and fertile soils ideal for farming and livestock.

Agriculture is the backbone of the local economy, engaging over 80% of the population. Major crops include yam, cassava, maize, groundnuts, cowpea, and rice, with Kpassa and Damanko serving as key production hubs. Livestock farming—particularly goats, sheep, cattle, and poultry—is widespread, while fishing along the Oti River supports food security and trade. Despite its agricultural strength, the district faces challenges in post-harvest losses, irrigation access, and market connectivity. The Eastern Corridor Road, which passes through Kpassa, remains a vital but underdeveloped transport link.

Development efforts have accelerated under the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) project and other initiatives. Recent projects include:

●    Construction of classroom blocks in Sibi Central and Najingon
●    Boreholes in Ujagando, Pibila, and Mola communities
●    A 450-meter fence wall for the Damanko market
●    CHPS compounds in Obunja and other underserved areas
●    Street naming and signage across Kpassa
●    Supply of mono and dual desks to schools
●    Reshaping of feeder roads to improve access to tourist sites

These interventions aim to improve education, health, sanitation, and local governance. However, some completed facilities—such as clinics, maternity centers, and classroom blocks—remain unused due to delays in counterpart funding and commissioning.
