Guan Municipal District: Unlocking Tourism and Agricultural Potential in Ghana’s Newest Municipality
Guan District, the youngest in Ghana’s Oti Region, was inaugurated in October 2021 following Legislative Instrument 2416 and encompasses the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi traditional areas.
With its capital at Likpe-Mate and a population of 28,238, Guan spans about 343 square kilometers and features a predominantly informal economy rooted in agriculture, artisanal crafts, and petty trade. It stands out as a key cocoa-producing area and cultivates rice, cassava, and coconut, with men leading agricultural efforts and women dominating service and sales roles.
DCE Profile
The district has swiftly embraced development, led by District Chief Executive Mr. Godfried Koku Koffie, who assumed office in April 2025 after receiving 79 percent approval from the Assembly. His administration has prioritized tourism as a transformational tool, commissioning feasibility studies into Guan’s rich cultural heritage, ancestral caves, waterfalls, mountain ranges, and terrain suitable for paragliding. Plans are underway to establish a dedicated Tourism Development Planning Committee.
Additional interventions include groundwork for the Agenda 111 hospital to strengthen healthcare access, infrastructure expansion for roads and office space, youth-focused digital skills programs targeting 5,000 beneficiaries, and mechanization proposals to boost agricultural productivity. The Ministry of Local Government has supported the district with vehicles, equipment, and staffing to enable effective administration across its 13 electoral areas.
Mr. Koffie’s leadership reflects a bold vision to position Guan District as a thriving hub of agro-tourism, infrastructure development, and youth empowerment. His efforts are shaping a new chapter in the district’s journey toward dynamic, inclusive growth in Ghana’s northern frontier.
